Although many people consider Budapest to be the capital of escape rooms, new venues are popping up in every part of the world day by day. In one of the largest markets, the US, their number has grown a hundredfold in the last 5 years.
To this day, it is disputed which escape room was the first in the world: a game in Singapore and one in Silicon Valley claim this title. The two began operations in 2007 at almost the same time. The real breakthrough, on the other hand, began in Hungary, bringing the big escape room explosion in 2011–2012 and making the country a citadel of escape games. Thus, there was no question that the first escape room world championship was also held in Budapest in 2017.
Recent research has shed light on the explosive growth the industry has undergone in the US over the past 5 years. The numbers themselves are pretty telling, today there are a hundred times as many escape rooms in the United States as there were 5 years ago.

This growth is no coincidence - opening an escape room in the US is a pretty good deal. According to a study last year, an average room generates $ 315,000 revenue annually. These would be great numbers in every part of the world, especially when you consider that a site typically operates 2-3 escape rooms in parallel. In addition, the market is huge, with a growing interest in the service. Considering all this, 2500 is still not that many – there are 20 escape rooms per million inhabitants in Hungary, while this number is only 7 in the US.
