There’s something deliciously thrilling about being terrified out of our wits when we’re watching a horror movie. The low budget efforts tend to max out on cheap effects like jump-scares. Then you have the slatter and gore junkies, who love a good “Ichi The Killer” or the French film “Martyrs.” And finally we have the slow burning psychological movies where the build up is a slow and steady journey into the dark and forbidden. Sitting at home, with a tub of popcorn balancing on your knees is the perfect place to enjoy these delights. After all, you’re feeling safe within your familiar four walls. So how can we up the ante?

It was only a matter of time before the escape room genre took horror to its bosom. Here we have a ready-made horror scenario, with a group of individuals trapped in a confined space. Can a better situation exist for the introduction of elements of terror? But on the whole, the terror aspects of many so called “horror” games, is secondary to the actual escape game itself. Clues will still need to be found and puzzles solved. Let’s have a look at some of the most famous escape room games that revolve around the theme of horror.

1. The Official SAW Escape Room

“Do you want to play a game?” Based on the James Wan movie which spawned a massive franchise, this is the “official” Saw Escape Room in Las Vegas. Built under license from the movie company, it has all the yummy goodness you’d expect from the twisted mind of John Kramer, the “Jigsaw killer.” Though the rooms do look spectacular and identical to those seen in the movie, there’s no torture or blood here. If you’re in Las vegas, then it’s certainly worth checking out.

2. The Basement

In this game, you’re being held hostage by the serial killer, Edward Tandy. He has a thing for keeping people tied up and you’ll have to prove that you’re worthy of being freed. The game is part of a number of chapters and there are also other rooms to play in as separate scenarios. The game can get pretty intense as they have really done a great job in making it so immersive. It’s also quite difficult.

3. The Asylum

The 13th gate is often described by those who’ve played in it as the greatest haunted house in the US. It’s a massive and dark attraction that manages to blend the lines between reality and horror to spectacular effect. Not only is the set design off the charts, but the game makes use of actors and amazing make-up artists. It’s quite a stressful game, and the main story takes place in a disused asylum. Definitely not for the faint of heart.

4. Spooky Room 479

A perfect mixture of creepy and intense is the best way to sum up this fantastic escape room. The production values are very high and many players say that it really is scary. Essentially all the action takes place in a student dormitory that no one has entered for years. Sounds like a good idea to go visit. The thing is, when you’re sweating with fear, it’s too late as you realise that maybe it wasn't such a good idea after all. One thing is certain, you’re not alone in there. On a scale of 1 - 10, it scores around an 8 in difficulty.

5. Zoe

As a haunted house themed escape room game, Zoe ticks all the right boxes. It’s super scary, with excellent set design, as well as each of the locations multiple rooms having their own distinct themes. Of course, the game actually takes place through a huge haunted house. Essentially, you have been summoned by some creepy little girl. She’s trapped in this house of horrors with you. One thing that’s outstanding about the whole experience, is that it’s so immersive you can really feel your pulse quicken. But nothing comes close to the fact that at certain points, unseen actors will gently “touch” you. Everyone, including the guys, all scream.

6. Bogeyman

Here you and your team play a group of paranormal investigators who are trying to crack a child abduction case. As far as an escape room game, it offers two levels of fear, “Mild Fear” and “Full Fear”! The room sets, which are mainly children’s bedrooms,  are constructed in a maze like pattern, increasing the possibility of a scare around every corner. In Bogeyman, the teams get split up, with each group of players having to solve their own set of puzzles, before they all eventually meet up towards the end. There are live actors who spice up the fear factor and they do a stellar job.
