Like most other industries that rely on social interaction, escape rooms have been badly affected by the recent pandemic.

The escape room industry isn’t alone in struggling, many other forms of entertainment have seen locations closed and customers forced to pursue their interests online. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette explains how some operators of escape rooms have switched a portion of their business to online experiences to negate the negative impact of their closures. On our site, you can find online titles such as Moonshine Shack and Ghost Island, offering variations in terms of themes but still dedicated to the core concept of escape. Indeed, by not having a physical location, the online escape room industry could find itself thriving and becoming a threat to the physical locations. In that respect, escape rooms have plenty in common with bingo halls.

Many bingo halls were also forced to close throughout the United States through the pandemic, shifting players onto their mobile devices whilst restricted to their homes. Like the escape room industry, bingo players found no shortage of providers offering solid experiences online, with some diverse and varied providers offering more games than a single location could provide. There are numerous different games on Gala Bingo, including Bingo Beats Chakra and Rainbow Riches Bingo. They offer very different themes around the same game genre to players, which a physical location may struggle to do. It makes it challenging for those brick-and-mortar locations to get a foothold back in the market, which strikes a remarkable similarity with the escape room industry.

What would make it even harder to get a foothold in the market is to take your escape room experience and mix it with bingo to give you two games in one. Imagine you’re in a team of six and working together to beat the room, but also adopting a bingo game to give you a winner from your group, too. It might not be the best thing for the bingo industry, but it would add a new dimension to your escape room challenge.

The idea is straightforward. Instead of bingo balls, you take events and occurrences from the room as your ‘balls’. You will need around 25 different events, which we’ll come to in a second.

On your cards, which should be divided into a five by five grid, pick around 12 of those occurrences at random and fill them in like on a bingo card. Make a different bingo card for each player, mixing up each set of occurrences well. When you have your cards complete, hand one to each player to mark off an event or circumstance each time it happens.

What will we use as our occurrences? There are some excellent staple choices such as these below, which will work in any escape room.

  • A player unintentionally scratches their head
  • A player walks around with something in their hand that others don’t know about
  • A player works on a puzzle that has already been solved
  • A player rips something out of a teammates’ hands
  • A player decides they’re in charge
  • A player searches for clues in the same place several times

You will likely think of some more, but if you get short, think about your group. Does a member of your party swear a lot? If so, ‘xxx swears twice in one sentence’ might be funny. Someone else might take a sip of a drink or claim something is impossible. Be creative when coming up with the occurrences, and make sure you have enough for each card to be varied and well mixed. This will ensure you can have fun marking them off and observing your teammates while the fun is going. Who knows, it might even lead you to solve a few puzzles.

Make sure you have a prize for the winner, maybe the rest of the group buys them dinner, or they pick up the tab, and most of all, enjoy playing Escape Room Bingo. Just don’t tell your local bingo hall you’re cutting them out of the event and killing two birds with one stone!

Transparency at Work
After experiencing how many companies try and keep certain employees and members of management in the dark about certain areas of business, Hubspot decided to take the opposite approach. To that end, all people there enjoy total transparency from strategic decisions to the smallest nitty-gritty.
