Yes, it is true. The Darwin-price burglar is called Rye Wardlaw and managed to commit this super performance in Vancouver.

According to The Columbian, the case happened as follows:
The burglar first tried to break into the front door, but he failed, he could only damage it. However, since the escape room was in a mall, he found a key in its technical room, with which he got in the escape room in the middle of the night.
The problems started after that. Although Wardlaw could not tell the police why he had chosen the escape room as his target, it turned out that he had not really been able to find the way out.
He tried for a while and then gave up. According to the call log, he called 911 from the scene four times to help him get out. Well, he just couldn’t find the solutions to the puzzles. The police eventually helped our hero to get out, who was quite confused by the time they got to the scene. Whether this is his basic state or the adventure shocked him, may never be revealed.
This was not the first burglary when he was caught. But so far, he has at least always managed to leave the scene, but the escape room has caught him. He will be brought to justice for his deed even though nothing has disappeared from the room.
Part of the truth is that the lousy burglar did something right after all. Not that he went to an escape room after opening hours, or that he made damages.
On the other hand, he realized that if he could not find the way out, because he was stuck on a task, then he really should ask for help. It would have been better to ask the gamemasters during opening hours, the experience would have been much, much more enjoyable. But not everything can be perfect.
Lesson 1: If you can't get out of an escape room, always ask for help!
Lesson 2: If you go to an escape room, always buy a ticket. You will manage it cheaper, believe me :)
