Escape rooms are the latest trend and rightfully so. They are not just fun and make everyone learn about themselves and others but they can also aid companies in tightening and improving their team. This is often the key factor that makes a corporation successful and lets it rise above the competition. Besides, escape games take place away from the company’s grounds and therefore offer the staff a neutral area where the borders between departments and hierarchies can get blurry.
So, what roles do the individual members of a team play in an escape room? Our team from Every Escape Room took a closer look and came up with these five:
This role doesn’t have to be filled by the supervisor. The one who can keep the big picture in mind and an eye on the ticking clock gets to be boss. Whether it’s the intern, janitor or actual boss – that is completely unimportant. He must be respected and have a grip on the individual roles inside the escape room in order to run everything smoothly and efficiently – before time is up.
The explorer is driven by curiosity and always wants to know what’s hidden behind the corners. He looks behind paintings and goes through the escape room’s trash can – as long as he can satisfy his curiosity. He diverts his attention to seemingly unimportant items which would be missed by everyone else. His view of the world is a little different and he helps the rest of the team to see things that aren’t important at first sight.

Each escape game needs someone who thinks logically. This doesn’t have anything to do with intelligence but with patience and analytical thinking. When the explorer sheds light on many pieces of the puzzle, it takes the thinker to put them together and find out which pieces actually belong to the puzzle and which ones just distract. He thinks outside the box and can withstand the time pressure very well.
No team can solve an escape game if there is no one who mends all people and turns them into a group. If everyone just works and thinks by themselves – as we often do in our daily lives – you won’t achieve anything here. Due to the complexity and extremely limited time, it is essential that all work together as one and subordinate all their thoughts and actions. This is where the mediator steps in: he speaks a common language and resolves or prevents misunderstandings which always arise in the heat of the battle in the exit room.

Especially in the world of workplaces everything is focused on efficiency, good numbers and outperforming the competition. What’s often missing here is the fun. A few jokes here and there ease the tension and create an open atmosphere that makes everyone have twice as much fun at work.
In the escape room it also takes someone to be the fun master. Doesn’t have to be the class clown, just somebody who adds a little humor to the dire matter and helps everyone enjoy themselves even more that they already do.
